Domaine Motz
– Alsace, France
Founded in 1808, Motz Estate is now run by Norbert Motz, a 6th-generation winemaker, and his family in Bernardswiller, south of Strasbourg. Since 2011, the estate has embraced organic viticulture, and in 2019, their sons, Florent and Nicolas, introduced a new range of natural wines under the Flo and Nico Motz label.
The brothers are committed to organic farming, with a strong focus on biodiversity, covering the soil with crops like oats, clover, and radishes to nourish the ecosystem. Their estate spans over five unique terroirs around the village, including the region’s typical soils, which are rich in limestone, clay, and marl.
The Motz brothers continue to cultivate a variety of grapes, including Sylvaner, Muscat, Pinot Noir, Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc, and Gewurztraminer. The natural yeasts present on the grape skins drive fermentation, a process that lasts between 2 to 6 months. The wines are then aged on fine lees in century-old oak barrels, allowing them to develop complexity and depth.
The result is a line of expressive, terroir-driven wines that showcase the true essence of Alsace. Signature bottles include Wine Brothers, a blend of Sylvaner and Auxerrois, combined with a maceration of Pinot Gris, which gives the wine its shimmering color. On the nose, Wine Brothers offers roasted hazelnuts and juicy peach aromas. This vintage is dynamic, mineral-driven, and designed for sharing.
Forgotten Nature is an orange wine crafted from 100% Sylvaner, whose orange hue comes from a 10-day maceration of whole bunches. On the nose, it offers delicate aromas of white flowers and peaches, while the palate reveals roasted hazelnuts and a saline freshness. Forgotten Nature is an ideal companion throughout the meal, from aperitif to dessert.
