Julien Sunier
– Beaujolais, France
In 2005, Julien acquired an old farm, “La Ferme des Noisetiers,” but it wasn’t until 2008 that he fulfilled his dream of becoming a farmer and winemaker, establishing his own estate in the village of Avenas. Situated 750 meters above sea level, the estate began with just 2.2 hectares and has since expanded to 9 hectares across the appellations of Morgon, Fleurie, and Régnié.
The estate’s unique granite-rich soils provide an ideal foundation for Julien’s Gamay vines. Organic farming has been central to the estate since its founding, with certification from Alpes Contrôles. Grapes are carefully hand-sorted in the vineyard and vinified using native yeasts and traditional carbonic maceration, with no added sulfur during fermentation.
In recent years, climatic challenges have disrupted production, leading Julien to create the Pur Jus entity and SARL Sunier to sustain the estate. By sourcing organic or transitioning grapes, he continues producing natural wines while also inspiring young winegrowers and fostering strong community ties.
One of the estate’s flagship wines is “Réginé,” crafted from whole-cluster fermentation with indigenous yeasts and aged 20% in epoxy cement vats and 80% in 228-litre oak barrels for eight months on fine lees. This wine is distinguished by the scent of vine peach and its velvety texture.
