Protótipo
– Douro, Portugal
In the northern part of Portugal, within the larger Douro region, lies Távora-Varosa, a region known for its production of sparkling wines and high-quality wines. With warm summers and mild winters, the region provides an ideal environment for grape maturation, nourished by the distinctive blend of schist and granite soils.
Prototipo is the project of the two Valente brothers. Their motto, “Wine is bottled grapes,” reflects their commitment to minimal intervention winemaking and since 2015 they have been on a mission to craft exceptional natural wines while prioritizing ecological responsibility. The result: pet nats, or vinhos Ancestrais in Portugese, that elevate the often simple pet nat to an exciting sparkling level.
Protótipo’s 9 hectares of vineyards are located in Aldeia de Cima at an altitude of around 700 meters above sea level. The diverse plots feature predominantly old vines that yield low quantities of grapes, destined for crafting high-quality Pet Nats (Vinhos Ancestrais): P1 (Rosé), P2 (White), and P3 (Red). Their Field Blend Natural, a white wine produced from ancient vines, entices with brioche, honey, a hint of pineapple on the nose, mineral undertones and a lively acidity that culminate in a long-lasting finish. The Pet Nat Branco is fruity, not too dry, unfiltered and full of flavor.
