Movia
– Brda, Slovenia
Under the direction of Aleš Kristančič, Movia is one of the most historic and respected names in the Goriška Brda and Collio regions, a borderland where Slovenia and Italy meet.
The Kristančič family has been the custodian of the estate since 1820, though its origins trace back to the early 18th century. Today, Movia spans 30 hectares of vineyards, 25 of which lie on both sides of the border, rooted in marl and sandstone soils that define this rolling landscape.
Farming is entirely organic and biodynamic. Vineyards are fertilized with natural composts, cover crops are maintained to encourage biodiversity, and no synthetic herbicides or pesticides are used. In the cellar, fermentations occur spontaneously with native yeasts; no additives are introduced, and only minimal sulfur is used when necessary. Even the cleaning of the winery is done with steam, ensuring that only clean water returns to the environment. Movia has been officially certified organic since 2004.
Their wine portfolio includes still, sparkling, and late-harvest wines.
The 2025 vintage began with a cool, wet spring and a warm, stormy June, followed by one of the coldest Julys in decades – conditions that preserved acidity and aromatic precision in the grapes. Harvest came early, two weeks ahead of schedule, and early tastings suggest an excellent year for the white varieties and some early-ripening reds such as Merlot.
